Xoloitzcuintli
History:These dogs date back thousands of years. They are considered a rare breed. The Xoloitzuintli was considered to be the representative of the god Xolotl which is where the dog gets his name from. Ancient Indians and some today consider them sacred animals that helped their owners' souls through the underworld. Similar to the Chihuahua these dogs were thought to lead people to their spiritual nirvana. Despite the long history of the Xoloitzcuintli, in its native Mexico most people think they have become extinct. Although the dog remains quite rare we do know that the Xolo has existed in Mexico for over 3,000 years, and can justly claim the distinction as first dog of the Americas. http://www.akc.org/breeds/xoloitzcuintli/index.cfm http://www.perrosdemexico.com.mx/razas/standares/std_234.html
